Leadership Lessons: From the Iron Man of India.

He never let conflicts affect his relationships, Sardar ji was a strong follower of Gandhiji and also had a strong belief in Jawaharlal Nehru; there were instances when Vallabhbhai Patel was forced to take logical decisions against the appeasing ways of Nehru or uncompromising stand of Gandhiji- he never let such incidents affect his relations and was invested in doing the right thing no matter what’s the cost.

Entrepreneur! is the most exploited word of our times according to me.

The second most exploited word I believe is “Leadership”. There are so many books, philosophies and cliched quotes about leadership today, that the word itself has lost its true meaning in the midst of multiple interpretations.

Leadership may exist in multiple forms but at the core of it, it’s all about having the will to do the right thing no matter what. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was one such leader who embodied this core principle of Leadership like no other.

Think of it for a moment, unifying about 560+ princely states into a single nation, taking care of law and order in a country which didn’t had enough resources to take care of its population courtesy of the british, rising communal violence across the country resulting from the partition were no small problems. Despite being close to his death, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel didn’t let his old age or ill health come in between the duties of nation building; those few years before and after the independence were crucial for the nation and the chaos the country was facing was unimaginable, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel rose to the challenge and ensured the foundation for the growth of Independent India was all set.

Qualities which made Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel an unforgettable leader,

Vallabhbhai Patel had this rare gift of moving people with mere words. He was a greatly skilled speaker and negotiator and could get a gathering of thousands of people electrified and fill them up with fire to to do things. It was because of this very ability he was called “Sardar”, which meant a leader of the pack.

Vallabhbhai Patel is also called the ironman of India, It was only because of his strong will that we have a united India and been functioning as a united nation since independence.

He was a master statesman who realized very early on, the importance of having able administrators for the efficient functioning of the nation starting from the towns and districts level. He was the one responsible one for setting up IAS and IPS which have become an integral part of ensuring effective administration and safeguarding law and order in the country.

The above list can go endless, as its the leaders like these and their unique leadership qualities are the ones which have made India as we know it today.

But the bigger question is what are you going to do after reading this?

Getting a momentary high out of reading about our freedom fighters and national leaders and then going back to our same old lives is what we have been doing so far. Is that enough?

We the modern day Indians of our beloved nation, have been conveniently ignoring the greater responsibility that these great leaders have left behind on our shoulders and that is of building a greater nation.

And, what are we doing?

We are living a complacent life, slaving and slogging for a monthly salary in return for the work which we do not feel fulfilled about, yet choose to continue just because it pays us. We are deliberately blinding ourselves from seeing the greater problems that are plaguing our nation.

Yes, there was a time when our country needed leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Gandhi ji and many others who gave their blood and sweat to free our nation. Their dream of a free nation was just a first step in making our country great again, the next step and the larger dream is to make our country actually great and to do that we need a new set of leaders.

Leaders who would innovate, create and generate more jobs at the grassroots level of the society and inspire more and more people to take up entrepreneurship because entrepreneurship at the micro and macro levels, is the only way how our country can achieve the next level of growth.

It was precisely for this purpose, why I set out to building the incubator to create a community of entrepreneurs who are filled with a drive and purpose to change the way things have been functioning in our country.

I’m doing my part and all the budding entrepreneurs in our incubator are doing their part. The question now is,

What are you doing?
